With NinjaBoard v1, we're introducing Mootools Sortables as an replacement for the old way of changing list ordering in Joomla!.

The saving is handled by a very clever script that amongst other things use ajax saving of the order.

This makes setting your own custom ordering as easy as can be, you simply click, drag and job done!
